Myanmar commits to promoting regional peace, stability, and development, President

Message of President Asif Ali Zardari to Min Aung Hlaing, Acting President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, on the Independence Day of Myanmar

Islamabad : On behalf of the Government and the people of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, and on my own behalf, I extend my warm and sincere felicitations to Your Excellency and to the Government and people of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar on the seventy-eighth anniversary of your Independence Day.

Pakistan and Myanmar share a long history of cordial relations, rooted in mutual respect and understanding since the early years following Myanmar’s independence. These ties are reinforced by historic cultural links and a tradition of goodwill between our peoples. Over time, our relationship has continued to evolve, with growing engagement in areas such as trade, defence, health, culture and people-to-people exchanges. I am confident that there remains considerable potential to further expand our cooperation through practical initiatives and closer institutional links that serve the shared interests of our two countries.

Pakistan attaches importance to working with Myanmar to promote peace, stability and development in our wider region. Both our countries are active members of the United Nations and other international forums, where Pakistan values cooperation with Myanmar on issues of mutual concern, based on respect for sovereignty, dialogue and multilateralism.

We also recognise the importance of broader regional engagement. Myanmar’s role within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is significant for regional stability and economic integration. Pakistan, as a Sectoral Dialogue Partner of ASEAN, remains interested in strengthening its engagement with ASEAN and its member states, including Myanmar, in ways that promote connectivity, development and mutual understanding.

I take this opportunity to reaffirm Pakistan’s desire to strengthen bilateral contacts with Myanmar and to encourage greater interaction between our public and private sectors. Such engagement can help translate our longstanding goodwill into tangible outcomes for our peoples.
