Xi Concludes US Visit as World Welcomes Closer China-US Ties

Beijing (GNP): Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived back in Beijing on Saturday after concluding a state visit to the United States, during which the leaders of the two countries reached a number of common understandings on bilateral ties and other issues of mutual interest.

Xi left Washington on Friday, with senior US government officials seeing him off at the airport, where a 21-gun salute was fired in his honour. Overseas Chinese and Chinese students gathered along the roadside on the way to the airport, waving the national flags of both countries to mark the visit.

Xi said the understandings reached during the visit further enriched the vision of building a constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability, calling on both sides to translate that vision into action and find the right way for the two major countries to coexist.

The visit drew close international attention, with figures from around the world welcoming closer communication between the two powers and saying greater cooperation could help address global challenges.

Sourabh Gupta, senior fellow at the Institute for China-America Studies in Washington, described the visit as a historic moment, saying the United States and China should be partners rather than adversaries in a turbulent world. He welcomed Xi’s announcement that China will invite 100,000 young Americans for exchanges and study over the next five years, expressing hope that the US would similarly become more open to Chinese scholars and students.

Denis Simon, senior fellow at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, said Xi’s remarks sent a positive signal, stressing that despite differences and competition, the two countries should strengthen cooperation to achieve sustainable development. He said greater interactions between the two leaders could help build a stronger foundation of mutual trust, adding that no meaningful solution to global issues could be found without close US-China collaboration.

At the state dinner hosted by President Trump at the White House, Xi highlighted the history of the Chinese and American people standing together against Japanese militarist aggression during World War II, along with the story of American teacher Ronald Sakolsky, who supported China’s desert-control efforts. Xi said such friendship, forged in blood and fire, would live on through future generations.

Sakolsky said he was deeply moved to hear Xi mention him at the dinner, adding that he hoped the agreements reached during the visit would be implemented, describing this as what people in both countries wanted.

The international community also weighed in on the visit’s significance for global stability. Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia welcomed the meeting between the two leaders, noting that any agreements between China and the United States would affect the global economy as well as Russia’s own economy.

Former Slovenian President Danilo Turk said Xi’s visit was important for improving the well-being of people in both countries and maintaining global political and economic stability, describing China as having demonstrated the image of a responsible major country.

Brazil’s Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Andre de Paula, said that when China and the United States understand and respect each other and build consensus around shared interests, it makes the whole world more optimistic about the future.

Vladimir Putin said, “Any agreements between China and the United States that have a positive significance are welcome to us.”
