New York (GNP): The First Committee of the 81st United Nations General Assembly has adopted three resolutions tabled by Pakistan. The committee deals with disarmament and international security, and the outcome shows continued international backing for Pakistan’s work on arms control.
The first resolution, titled “Confidence-building measures in the regional and subregional context”, was adopted without a vote. Adoption without a vote means no delegation pressed the text to a ballot.
The second resolution, on conventional arms control at the regional and sub regional levels, drew the widest support. It was adopted with 180 votes in favour and two against, with no abstentions. The voting display shows India and Israel as the two delegations that voted against.
Earlier, the committee adopted Pakistan’s resolution on effective international arrangements to assure non-nuclear-weapon States against the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons. It passed with 122 votes in favour and none against.

Taken together, the three texts cover security assurances for non-nuclear-weapon States and regional approaches to arms control and confidence-building. These are the areas in which Pakistan has led initiatives at the UN for decades.
The results also come at a difficult moment for global security. Tensions are running high and the architecture of arms control is eroding. In that setting, the resolutions offer practical and cooperative ways to reduce risks, build trust and promote peace and stability at the regional and international levels.
