Two Guantanamo Bay detainees transferred by US to Pakistan

Latest effort by US to reduce detainee population at Guantanamo Bay

Washington, February 24, 2023: The US has announced the transfer of two Guantanamo Bay detainees to Pakistan, marking a significant step towards the detention facility’s closure.

The transfer was conducted following a diplomatic agreement between the US and Pakistan, with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) facilitating the process.

The detainees had been held at Guantanamo Bay for over a decade. Their cases had been reviewed by a government panel which determined that they no longer threatened national security.

She added, “We are grateful to the government of Pakistan for its cooperation and support in this matter.”

The United States remains committed to closing the Guantanamo Bay detention facility. It will continue to work with its partners and allies to transfer the remaining detainees cleared for release or transfer.
