Beijing Top Diplomat meets Russia’s Security Chief

In an apparent allusion to Beijing and Moscow's objectives of altering the world order in their favor, two officials agreed to collaborate harder together in order to improve global governance.

Beijing, 22 February (GNP): China’s Foreign Ministry reported about the meeting of Nikolai Patrushev, the head of Russia’s Security Council with China’s top diplomat Wang Yi on Tuesday in Moscow.

During their meeting, they discussed a variety of issues, including bilateral relations and international security.

According to the readout, the two officials pledged to cooperate harder in optimizing global governance which is clearly a reference to Beijing and Moscow’s goals of reshaping the international order in their favor.

They also agreed to oppose the Cold War’s perspective, ideological competition, and bloc tussles.

In statements shown by state television on Tuesday, Wang told Patrushev via a Russian interpreter that Beijing’s relationship with Moscow was “rock solid”.

“Chinese-Russian relations are mature in character: they are rock solid and will withstand any test in a changing international situation,” he said.

Without providing detailed information, the statement claimed that the topic of Ukraine was also brought up in the high-level discussions between Wang and Patrushev.

Russian state media TASS while citing the Russian Foreign Ministry reported that a meeting is also expected to be held between Wang and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Wednesday.

Rising Concern to the USA:

A few days prior to this high-level meeting, US officials publicly voiced their concerns about how China’s continued alliance with Russia would affect the conflict in Ukraine.

Although claiming neutrality in the crisis, the Chinese government has declined to denounce Russia’s invasion, instead choosing to deepen economic relations and carry on cooperative military drills.
