Tornadoes wreak havoc on Chicago homes

19 homes on Stoney Creek Drive, within the 2800 block, suffered varying degrees of damage, police said.

Chicago, 13 July, 2023 (GNP): As severe weather conditions persist in the United States, a series of tornadoes have struck the city of Chicago, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

Numerous videos circulating on social media depict the formation of ferocious winds in the northwestern suburbs. The videos showed tornadoes in Kane County, particularly in South Elgin and Saint Charles.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has officially acknowledged the occurrence of tornadoes in South Elgin and Campton Hills. In response to this alarming situation, local authorities swiftly closed down airport operations. Moreover, they issued urgent advisories to residents, urging them to seek immediate shelter. The resounding tornado sirens echoed through the streets of Chicago, the nation’s third-largest city.

The authorities promptly responded to reports of tornado touchdowns at the Edgewater (Del Webb) subdivision located at Bowes and Randall Roads. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries and authorities have confirmed the safety of all residents.

However, 19 homes on Stoney Creek Drive, within the 2800 block, suffered varying degrees of damage, police said. Elgin police further stated that 10 homes sustained significant damage, while the remaining nine experienced cosmetic damage.

Additionally, the NWS reported a tornado touched down near Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on Wednesday evening. It is one of at least eight tornadoes that struck northeastern Illinois, with four reported in Cook County. The NWS advised residents in the warned area to seek shelter due to intermittent ground touching of the tornado, which was moving towards east.

Although dramatic images surfaced featuring two tornadoes, professional meteorologists clarified that they do not appear to be twin tornadoes spawned from the same storm cell, as they exhibited distinct rotations.

Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport witnessed another tornado, causing damage to multiple warehouses on its west side, as captured in videos. The NWS described a tornado near Stickney and Berwyn as “large and extremely dangerous.”

Furthermore, reports confirmed another tornado touchdown near Hodgkins and Summit. Also, weather spotters observed snapped trees and scattered debris in Carol Stream, DuPage County. A tornado was reported to have touched down in that area.

As the situation unfolds, authorities continue to assess the extent of the damage caused by these destructive tornadoes. Efforts are underway to ensure the safety and well-being of residents in affected areas.
