London, 31 May, 2023 (GNP): Prominent Muslim leader Tipu Sultan’s bedchamber sword fetched at an astonishing price of $17.4 million, in a historic event. Bonhams in London recently showcased the prestigious sword of the Valiant Muslim leader at the Islamic and Indian art sale.
During the auction, collectors, enthusiasts, and historians remained captivated by the remarkable collection of artifacts. However, The sale of this exceptional masterpiece of “the tiger of Mysore” stole the spotlight.
Considered the finest and most significant weapon in Tipu Sultan’s arsenal, the sword has a personal connection to the ruler. The auction site described the blade, labeled with “The Sword of the Ruler” as exquisite.

Historically, Tipu Sultan, who governed the kingdom of Mysore from1782-1799, was famous for his commanding role in wars. This intricate piece from Mysore was taken from his private chambers in the palace, media reported. Intricately crafted with gold lettering, representing five characteristics of God and two invocations to God by name.
Bruno Vinciguerra, the CEO of Bonhams, expressed his delight at such an exceptional bidding result for the remarkable piece. Meanwhile, Oliver White, the head of Islamic and Indian Art emphasized the sword’s association with Tipu Sultan rendering it the most remarkable weapon.

Furthermore, Nima Sagharchi, the group head of Islamic and Indian Art at Bonhams, expressed awe at the sword’s extraordinary history, provenance, and craftsmanship.
Tipu Sultan’s sword commanded a price that exceeded initial expectations by sevenfold. Bonhams, a renowned auction house, confirmed that this momentous auction broke all the previous records for the highest price attained for an Indian and Islamic artifact.
Conclusively, the intense bidding competition, featuring phone bidders, highlighted the sword’s undeniable significance.
