South Africa sets record for Highest-Ever T20 Run chase

South Africa made 259-4 in 18.5 overs. On their way to 259, the Proteas broke both the previous domestic and international T20 run chase marks.

Centurion, 26 March 2023 (GNP): South Africa defeated West Indies by six wickets in a record-breaking run-fest at Centurion, completing the greatest successful chase of 259 in T20 cricket.

With 517 runs scored during the course of an extraordinary match at SuperSport Park, the game has the highest scoring total in T20 cricket history.

Earlier, South Africa won the toss and decided to bowl first.

Johnson Charles of West Indies scored 118 off 46 balls and made a record of fastest hundred in Men’s T20I. He smashed 100 off just 39 balls. Previously, this record was in the hands of Chris Gayle, who had 47 balls 100.

Top notch innings by Charles, who hit 11 sixes and 10 fours, plus Kyle Mayers’ 51 off 27 balls and Romario Shepherd’s unbeaten 41 off 18, helped West Indies to record their highest score in T20 internationals.

Nonetheless, that proved to be a lower total as South Africa reached to 92-0 after five overs and were then 149-0 after 10, with De Kock on 99 from 41 balls and opening partner Hendricks 45 not out off 19.

A 152-run opening partnership between De Kock and Reeza Hendricks, who scored 68 runs off of 28 balls, was broken when De Kock left the pitch immediately after reaching his century (100 off 43).

South Africa made 259-4 in 18.5 overs, surpassing West Indies’ 258-5 total with seven balls remaining.

On their way to 259, the Proteas broke both the previous domestic and international T20 run chase marks, besting Central Districts’ 248-4 against Otago in New Zealand’s domestic league in December 2016 and Bulgaria’s 246-4 against Serbia in June of last year.

South Africa tied the three-match series against West Indies at 1-1. The third and final game, which will be a decider will take place in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
