Punjab CM lauds Sharmeen for spotlighting social issues via documentaries

Lahore (GNP) :-   Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif met  Academy (Oscar) award-winning Pakistani-origin filmmaker and journalist Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy to discuss in detail the recently-launched Punjab Film City project in NSIT City Lahore, and agreed on mutual collaboration for the promotion of arts, culture and filmmaking in the province.

She said  that the Punjab Film City project would become Pakistan’s first “end-to-end” media production hub, and added that the project would provide facilities for film, television, digital media, VFX, and post-production.

She highlighted that Punjab Film City would include modern studios, sound stages, post-production labs, shooting locations, and a lake. A convention hall, media trade hub, and film and music school are also part of the project. She also directed Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) to restore Digital History Museum at Minar-e-Pakistan.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif appreciated Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s professional achievements and expertise; and termed her efforts in highlighting social issues through documentary filmmaking as commendable.

During the meeting, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy praised Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif for her contribution to arts and culture. She said that chief minister Punjab is doing a commendable job and described her leadership as exemplary, She added that people of Karachi also acknowledge her efforts, and noted that revival of Basant Festival after decades is a result of her personal interest and hectic efforts.

She underscored that prominent Hollywood personalities have shown interest in the festival and would be formally invited next year to promote it internationally.

She also appreciated the revival of Horse and Cattle Show in Punjab, stating that such festivals provide quality entertainment opportunities for the public.

Sharmeen Obaid-​Chinoy is a famous Pakistani filmmaker and activist. She is the first Pakistani to win an Academy Award for her documentary Saving Face in 2012. ​​Sharmeen started her career ​in 2002 while studying at Stanford University. Her first movie was Terror’s Children​ for The New York Times.​
