Poland strengthens border security with additional troops

Following the arrival of hundreds of Russia's Wagner mercenaries in Belarus last month, Poland has voiced worries over the border region.

Warsaw, 10 Aug, 2023 (GNP): In response to heightened security concerns, Poland has announced plans to deploy up to 10,000 additional troops to its border with Belarus. This move aims to support the border guard force and reinforce the country’s defences.

Defence Minister Mariusz Blaszczak provided insights into the deployment during an interview, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to ensuring its territorial integrity.

According to Minister Blaszczak, approximately 4,000 soldiers will directly support the Border Guard, while the remaining 6,000 will serve as a reserve force. The presence of troops near the border is intended to deter potential aggression and uphold national security.

Deputy Interior Minister Maciej Wasik further confirmed Poland’s strategic decision by announcing an additional deployment of 2,000 troops to the border with Belarus. The increased focus on the border region comes amid concerns stemming from the presence of battle-hardened Wagner mercenaries in Belarus last month.

President Alexander Lukashenko’s invitation to the Wagner mercenaries has fueled apprehension, leading to growing worries within Poland. Belarus’ ongoing military exercises near the border have added to regional tensions. President Lukashenko’s remarks suggesting restraint of Wagner fighters who harbor intentions to target Poland have underscored the gravity of the situation.

The influx of mainly Middle Eastern and African migrants and refugees attempting to cross the border has further heightened Poland’s concerns. The Polish-Belarusian border has seen an increase in undocumented individuals seeking entry.
