New York (GNP): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has emphasized the need for restraint, de-escalation, and sustained diplomatic engagement to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region.
Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif met with Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi, and senior officials from both countries also in attendance.
During the meeting, the two leaders reaffirmed the close, long-standing relationship between Pakistan and Iran and stressed the need to further deepen bilateral cooperation across all areas of shared interest.
The leaders also discussed the evolving regional situation, with Sharif voicing deep concern over the prolonged conflict and emphasizing the need for restraint, de-escalation, and sustained diplomatic engagement to achieve lasting peace and stability. He highlighted the importance of building on the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding and reaffirmed Pakistan’s readiness to continue playing a sincere, constructive role in supporting regional peace.
President Pezeshkian, in turn, commended Pakistan’s principled diplomatic approach and its ongoing efforts toward regional peace and security. He emphasized the enduring strength of Pakistan-Iran relations, rooted in shared history, culture, and faith, and reaffirmed Iran’s strong interest in further deepening cooperation across multiple areas.
Both sides underscored the importance of maintaining regular consultation and close coordination to navigate current challenges and capitalize on emerging opportunities, agreeing to work together toward regional peace, security, and prosperity.
Following the meeting, Sharif shared a post on X reaffirming the deep and enduring bonds between Pakistan and Iran, along with their mutual desire to strengthen bilateral cooperation across all areas of shared interest. He noted that the two leaders had an important exchange on the evolving regional situation, reiterating Pakistan’s deep concern over the prolonged conflict and the urgent need for restraint, de-escalation, and sustained diplomacy.
