Pakistan's Sports Diplomacy Strengthens Commonwealth Cooperation

GLASGOW (GNP): Pakistan’s sports diplomacy received renewed international attention as Pakistan participated in the 12th Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meeting (12CSMM) in Glasgow. Leading the Pakistani delegation, Member of the National Assembly Ali Zahid Khan reaffirmed the country’s commitment to using sport as a catalyst for youth empowerment, social inclusion, gender equality, and sustainable development while calling for stronger cooperation among Commonwealth member states.

Pakistan attended the high-level ministerial meeting alongside representatives from Commonwealth countries to discuss the role of sports in promoting inclusive societies, strengthening public health, and supporting sustainable development goals. The meeting was chaired by Maree Todd MSP, Scotland’s Minister for Mental Wellbeing, Public Health and Sport, bringing together policymakers and sports leaders to explore collaborative approaches for advancing sports across the Commonwealth.

Addressing the gathering, Ali Zahid Khan emphasized that sports should serve as more than competitive activities. He stated that sports have the potential to empower young people, promote equality, strengthen communities, and contribute to national development. Pakistan reiterated its commitment to expanding opportunities for youth participation while encouraging international partnerships that improve access to quality sports facilities, coaching, and education.

Pakistan expressed its readiness to work closely with Commonwealth partners to ensure that every young person has the opportunity to realize their sporting potential regardless of gender, social background, or economic circumstances. Officials stressed that investment in sports contributes not only to athletic success but also to education, leadership development, social cohesion, and economic growth.

The Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meeting provides an important platform for member countries to exchange best practices on sports governance, athlete welfare, infrastructure development, and international cooperation. It also supports the broader Commonwealth vision of using sports to advance peace, inclusion, and sustainable development across diverse societies.

Pakistan has increasingly promoted sports diplomacy as part of its international engagement strategy. Participation in global sporting forums enables the country to strengthen diplomatic relations while demonstrating its commitment to international cooperation beyond traditional political and economic issues. Through active involvement in Commonwealth initiatives, Pakistan seeks to develop stronger institutional partnerships that benefit athletes, sports organizations, and local communities.

The emphasis on sports science and innovation reflects growing recognition that modern athletic success depends on research, technology, medical support, and professional training systems. Commonwealth cooperation in these areas allows member countries to share expertise and improve national sports programs through collaborative learning and technical assistance.

Pakistan’s participation also aligns with global efforts to use sports as a tool for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to health, education, gender equality, and reduced inequalities. By promoting inclusive access to sports, governments can help improve physical well-being while fostering social integration and community resilience.

The discussions concluded with a shared commitment among Commonwealth members to deepen cooperation, strengthen sports governance, and expand opportunities for young people across the Commonwealth. Pakistan reaffirmed that it will continue working with international partners to harness the power of sports as an instrument for development, diplomacy, and long-term social progress.
