Pakistani Delegation Pays Tribute at Kigali Genocide Memorial

Kigali (GNP): A Pakistani business delegation visiting Rwanda laid flowers at the Kigali Genocide Memorial on Wednesday, paying tribute to the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The High Commission of Rwanda in Pakistan said the delegates reaffirmed their commitment to the message of “Never Again,” honouring those who lost their lives and recognising the importance of remembrance, reconciliation and peace.

The delegation is in the Rwandan capital for the Rwanda-Pakistan Investment Forum, which aims to deepen commercial ties between the two countries and explore opportunities for Pakistani businesses in Rwanda’s growing economy.

The memorial visit is a customary part of the itinerary for foreign delegations, officials and dignitaries visiting Kigali, offering visitors a chance to learn about Rwanda’s history and the events that shaped the nation.

The Kigali Genocide Memorial, located in the Gisozi neighbourhood, is the final resting place for more than 250,000 victims of the genocide, in which an estimated one million Tutsi and moderate Hutu were killed over roughly 100 days in 1994.

The site also houses exhibitions documenting the genocide and the country’s path towards recovery, serving as an educational centre on the causes and consequences of mass atrocity.

Since the genocide, Rwanda has rebuilt itself through a sustained emphasis on unity, reconciliation and economic development, positioning itself as a hub for business, technology and services in East Africa.

The country has actively courted foreign investors through streamlined registration processes and a range of incentives, a strategy that has drawn growing interest from Pakistani businesses.

For Pakistan, engagement with Rwanda forms part of a wider strategy to expand trade and investment links across Africa, with Pakistani businesses showing interest in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, agriculture, textiles, information technology and infrastructure.

The tribute at the memorial underscores that economic diplomacy between the two countries is being pursued alongside a recognition of shared values around peace and remembrance.
