Islamabad: 2nd June 2020 (GNP): In the treatment of viral infections, Pakistani molecular virologist, Professor Dr. Muhammad Mukhtar’s scientific contribution “Antiviral Potentials of Medicinal Plants”, has been ranked #1 by the Google Scholar. A search for “Antiviral Plants” in this world’s top-ranked scholarly database retrieves around 234,000 scientific contributions from researchers/professors worldwide, working on the use of traditional medicine, including plants or their products, in the treatment of viral infection. However, on top of the list is an article jointly authored by Pakistani and American scientists in which Prof. Dr. Muhammad Mukhtar, currently serving as Vice Chancellor of the National Skills University, served as Principal author. This widely read and ranked on top of the list scholarly contribution across the globe describes the potential of plant-derived constituents in the treatment of viral infections. However, their discovery path should be through establishing modern drug discovery practices Prof. Mukhtar team argues.
Worth mentioning here is that Prof. Mukhtar is recipient of an outstanding scientist visa (O-1 visa) award from the American government for his contributions towards understanding the passage of viruses into the human brain. The preliminary condition for this award is that the recipient is a Nobel Prize awardee or have equivalent credentials.

حال میں مشہور زمانہ ڈیٹا بیس ’ گوگل سکالر ‘ نے پاکستانی مالیکیولر وائرالوجسٹ پروفیسر ڈاکٹر محمد مختار کے تجزیاتی مقالے ’وائرسز کی بیماریوں کا علاج پودوں سے حاصل ہونے والی ادویات کے ذریعے ‘ کو پوری دنیا کے مقالہ جات میں بہترین قرار دے دیا۔ دنیا میں کہیں بھی گوگل سکالر میں (Antiviral plants) کے باری میں تلاش کرنے سے آپ کے سامنے دو لاکھ سے زیادہ مقالہ جات نظر آئیں گے، لیکن پہلے نمبر پر پروفیسر مختار اور اُن کے سائنسی رفقائے کار کا مقالہ ہے۔ یہ سائنسی تجزیہ پاکستانی اور امریکی سائنسدانوں کے ایک گروپ کی کاوشوں کی وجہ سے مکمل ہوا، پوری پاکستانی قوم کیلئے قابل فخر بات یہ ہے، کہ اِس سائنسی گروپ کی قیادت پروفیسر ڈاکٹر محمد مختار نے کی، جو اِس وقت نیشنل سکلز یونیورسٹی اِسلام آباد میں وائس چانسلر کے فرائض سر انجام دے رہے ہیں۔ زیر بحث مقالے میں اِس بات پر زور دیا گیا ہے، کہ پودوں سے حاصل ہونے والے اجزا مہلک ببیماریاں پھیلانے والے وائرسز کے علاج کیلئے استعمال کی جا سکتے ہیں، لیکن اِن پر سائنسی بنیادوں پر تحقیق ہونی چاہیے۔ قابل ذکر بات یہ ہے، کہ چین اور چند دوسرے ممالک نے پروفیسر مختار کے اِس نظریے کو مد ںظر رکھتے ہوئے، پودوں سے حاصل ہونے واے اجزا کی سائنسی بنیادوں پر کرونا وائرس کی روک تھا م کیلئے کلینیکل ٹرائلزز بھی شروع کر رکھے ہیں۔
