Pakistan, Sri Lanka to co-host Asia Cup 2023

The tournament will be hosted in a hybrid model with 4 matches being held in Pakistan, and the remaining 9 in Sri Lanka, ACC said.

Islamabad, 17 June, 2023 (GNP): The stage of the Asia Cup 2023 will be set at the grounds of Pakistan and Sri Lanka as they co-host the tournament this year. The announcement was made by organizers of the Asia Cup on Thursday.

The decision has been taken to avoid any misfortune regarding the participation of India as far as the 50-over tournament is concerned.

The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) stated that it agreed to the hybrid model proposed by the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Management Committee, Najam Sethi.

The ACC said, “We are delighted to announce that the Asia Cup 2023 will be held from August 31 to September 17 and will see the elite teams from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Nepal competing in 13 exciting ODIs.”

“The tournament will be hosted in a hybrid model with four matches being held in Pakistan, and the remaining nine matches being played in Sri Lanka,” the ACC added.

The council further said, “The 2023 edition will feature two groups, with two teams from each group qualifying for the Super Four stage. The top two teams from the Super Four stage will then face off in the final.”

“We look forward to welcoming fans from across the world to witness this celebration of cricket at its finest,” the council added.

Earlier, the PCB warned to turn its back on the forthcoming ODI World Cup to be held in October 2023 in India if the hosting rights of Asia Cup were compromised, according to the sources.

The venue for the cricket matches hasn’t been mentioned in the statement of ACC but it is confirmed that all the matches of India will not be held in Pakistan.

As per this model, the first round of the tournament will be arranged in Pakistan, which will be the first international tournament in the country after 15 years.

Appreciating the acceptance of his hybrid model for the Asia Cup, Sethi said, “I am elated that our hybrid version for the Asia Cup has been accepted.”

At first, the PCB’s choice for the 2nd venue of the game was Dubai due to the gate money income in which the current co-host is not going to be much favorable, according to the sources.

The council expected to recompense PCB on that ground.
