NEW YORK (GNP): Megan Rapinoe has renewed the debate over transgender participation in women’s sports after defending transgender athletes during an appearance on ABC’s The View. The former United States women’s national soccer team star argued that efforts to exclude transgender women from female sporting categories have become increasingly politicized, saying the discussion has shifted away from the real challenges confronting women’s sports.
Rapinoe, who’s spent years as one of the loudest voices for LGBTQ+ rights in sports, told the panel that all this noise around trans athletes conveniently drowns out the stuff that actually hurts women’s sports chronic underfunding, thin investment, pay that still lags way behind men’s leagues. If people really cared about protecting women’s athletics, she said, that’s where the energy should go. Not toward picking on a tiny, already-marginalized group.
She didn’t mince words, either. She called the whole debate a political “wedge,” something opponents of inclusion reach for instead of dealing with the deeper problems athletes face. Transgender athletes, she said, deserve the same dignity and respect as anyone else, and she warned that a lot of these new policies end up unfairly targeting them.
The timing isn’t random. Her comments come right on the heels of WNBA player Sophie Cunningham speaking out in favor of restricting women’s sports to those born biologically female something Cunningham has framed as a matter of fairness and safety. That’s earned her cheers from conservative commentators and plenty of pushback from trans-inclusion advocates.
And the bigger fight isn’t slowing down. Sports organizations everywhere are rewriting their eligibility rules, many tightening the biological requirements for women’s competitions. The Women’s Tennis Association just rolled out mandatory one-time genetic testing, adding itself to a growing list of federations doing the same. Even the IOC has updated its stance, while individual sports keep hammering out their own versions of the rules all trying to thread the needle between fairness, safety, and inclusion.
None of this is new for Rapinoe. She’s been making this same argument for years that women’s sports shouldn’t become a tool for pushing trans people to the margins, and that equality has to stay part of the conversation around how sports get governed.

People on her side of the debate point out that transgender athletes are a small sliver of competitors, and that the public conversation tends to blow their actual impact way out of proportion. Inclusion and fair competition, they argue, aren’t opposites you just need policies built on real science, tailored sport by sport.
Not everyone buys that. Critics say biological differences can hand real advantages in certain events, and that it’s on governing bodies to protect fairness within women’s categories hence the push for stricter standards, genetic testing included.
Governments, federations, sports leagues they’re all still figuring this out. And with Rapinoe’s comments back in the headlines, the question of where transgender athletes fit in women’s sports is, once again, front and center. It’s not an easy one to answer not when fairness, inclusion, safety, and competitive integrity are all pulling in different directions.
