Lahore, 11 September, 2023 (GNP): Lahore High Court (LHC) has taken a significant step in a contempt case by issuing a bailable arrest warrant for Islamabad’s Inspector General Police (IGP), Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan. This legal action stems from events following the re-arrest of Parvez Elahi, President of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), in Lahore.
Justice Mirza Viqas Rauf issued the arrest warrant after the IGP failed to appear before the court, despite a prior show cause notice. The notice had been served on him following Elahi’s re-arrest, and the court ordered the police to arrest the IGP and present him before the court on September 18.
The controversy began when Islamabad police arrested Elahi under 3-MPO (Maintenance of Public Order) soon after he was released by NAB in a corruption case. The Islamabad Police re-arrested him despite the restraining order by LHC against his possible detention and arrest.
The LHC had previously directed the Islamabad police chief to appear before the court on September 8, a summon that went unanswered.

Elahi’s legal woes began on June 1 when he was initially arrested outside his Lahore residence in connection with a Rs70 million corruption case. Since then, he has faced multiple arrests after the courts released him on bail.
In response to these legal developments, the former Punjab chief minister petitioned the LHC seeking contempt proceedings against the Islamabad IG, Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan. These events underscore the ongoing legal challenges and political tensions surrounding high-profile figures in Pakistan’s political landscape.
