Iran discusses nuclear plan with European diplomats in Abu Dhabi

The diplomats gathered to have a discussion over several matters including Iran’s atomic energy program.

Abu Dhabi, 14 June, 2023 (GNP): On Tuesday, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister said he has met with diplomats from Germany, France, and the United Kingdom in Abu Dhabi. The diplomats had gathered to discuss several matters including the Iran’s atomic energy program.

German foreign ministry confirmed the meeting took place on Monday to discuss the matters concerning Iran’s nuclear program.

“Following diplomatic consultations with regional and extra-regional parties, we met with our German, French, and British counterparts in Abu Dhabi and discussed a range of issues,” deputy foreign minister and top nuclear negotiator Ali Bagheri tweeted.

Additionally, Bagheri used this opportunity to foster bilateral cooperation and review regional issues with the officials present in Abu Dhabi.

Iran’s nuclear program has long been a subject of scrutiny by Western powers, imposing economic sanctions that have adversely affected the country’s economy.

However, the 2015 joint comprehensive plan of Action (JCPOA), a landmark deal relieved Iran from sanctions in exchange for restricting its nuclear program. Also, the deal ensured Iran’s commitment to carry out peaceful nuclear activities.

However, the unilateral withdrawal of the US from JCPOA deal in 2018 under former President Donald Trump, and the subsequent re-imposition of severe economic sanctions prompted Iran to decrease its compliance to the agreement.

On Monday, Nasser Kanani, the Iranian foreign ministry’s spokesman affirmed that the country has continued indirect negotiations with the United States to address the issue, media reports.

Furthermore, Iran’s supreme leader Ayatullah Ali Khamenei, who takes the final decisions in state policies reiterated Iran’s stance on not seeking nuclear weapons while expressing openness to agreements in certain nuclear fields.

During a phone call with his Iranian counterpart Ebrahim Raisi, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his views on the matter. Paris and its partners are committed to seeking a “diplomatic solution” to Iran’s nuclear issue, President Macron said.
