China and United States pledge to forge path of mutual respect and cooperation

Bangkok, 27 January, 2024 (GNP): In a landmark diplomatic meeting held in Bangkok, China’s senior diplomat Wang Yi and United States National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan engaged in profound discussions aimed at fostering a relationship founded on equality, mutual respect, and understanding.

Over the course of Friday to Saturday, Wang Yi, a distinguished member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, and director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, alongside his American counterpart Jake Sullivan, delved into critical matters shaping bilateral relations.

Central to the discussions was the imperative need for both nations to transcend condescension and embrace a posture of equality.

Wang Yi underscored the significance of seeking common ground over accentuating differences and earnestly respecting each other’s core interests as fundamental pillars of constructive engagement.

The principle of “one-China” and the commitments outlined in the three China-US joint communiques featured prominently in the talks. Wang Yi reiterated the non-negotiable stance on upholding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of China, including its stance on the Taiwan issue.

In his remarks, Wang Yi stressed the importance of the United States abiding by the principles outlined in previous agreements and refraining from actions that could be interpreted as supporting “Taiwan independence.” He reiterated China’s pursuit of peaceful reunification and urged the United States to align its policies in support of this shared objective.
