China and India commit to maintain peace and tranquility along disputed border

The discussions were focused on resolving issues related to the Line of Actual Control in the border's western sector.

Beijing, 16 Aug, 2023 (GNP): In a bid to stabilize the situation after recent tensions, military commanders from China and India have pledged to “maintain the peace and tranquility” along their disputed border. The defense ministries of both countries issued parallel statements late on Tuesday, announcing the outcomes of the 19th round of commander-level talks held on Sunday and Monday.

The discussions, which focused on resolving issues related to the Line of Actual Control in the border’s western sector, were described as “positive, constructive, and in-depth.” While both sides acknowledged the need to address remaining issues promptly, there is no indication of any concessions being made.

The joint statement revealed that in the interim, both parties have agreed to ensure “peace and tranquility on the ground in the border areas.”

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin expressed satisfaction with the talks and emphasized the commitment of both sides to sustain communication and dialogue through military and diplomatic channels. The talks were conducted at the Indian army post in Chushul-Moldo, sources said.

The Line of Actual Control demarcates territories held by China and India, stretching from Ladakh in the west to Arunachal Pradesh in India’s east, a region claimed by China. While the de facto border spans 3,488 kilometers according to India, China cites a shorter figure.

Tensions between the two nations have historical roots, including a war in 1962 over border issues. Although protocols have been established to prevent the use of firearms, incidents have occurred since then, including a clash in 2020 that led to casualties on both sides.

Both China and India have partially withdrawn troops from certain areas along the border but maintain a substantial military presence as part of a multi-tier deployment. The recent commitment to maintaining peace signifies a crucial step in de-escalating tensions.

China’s engagement with Pakistan, a rival of India, and its stance on the disputed Kashmir region have further complicated the situation. The two countries are working to address issues through dialogue and communication, with a focus on preserving peace and stability in the region.
