Babar Azam Sets 3 Priorities for Test Team

Babar Azam said that every opportunity to captain Pakistan comes with immense responsibility and pride. Reflecting on his earlier stint as captain, he explained that experience has helped him become a more composed leader. He said reviewing past decisions has given him greater clarity and allowed him to improve his approach. According to Babar, learning from successes and mistakes has helped him rebuild his mindset, enabling him to lead the team with confidence and a positive outlook.

Talking about the current Test squad, Babar Azam highlighted the presence of several talented young cricketers who have earned their places through outstanding domestic performances. He stressed that one of his biggest responsibilities as captain is to support emerging players, especially during difficult phases of international cricket. He noted that international matches bring significant pressure, and senior players must help youngsters remain calm, confident, and focused by sharing their experience both on and off the field.

Babar Azam identified discipline, fitness, and performance as the three pillars that will define Pakistan’s Test cricket going forward. He stated that these values will remain central to his captaincy and that no compromises will be made in these areas. He explained that maintaining high standards of discipline and physical fitness is essential for consistent success, while strong performances will naturally follow when players remain committed to these principles.

Discussing the recently concluded National Cricket Academy Red Ball Camp, Babar Azam described it as an important step in preparing the squad for the challenges of Test cricket. He said the camp focused heavily on improving fitness, fielding, patience, and mental toughness. Training under demanding conditions, he explained, helps players develop resilience and prepares them to perform effectively during long and challenging Test matches. He added that coaches also worked extensively on helping players manage pressure situations and respond positively to different match scenarios.

Looking ahead to the upcoming overseas assignments, Babar Azam expressed confidence in the team’s preparation for the conditions expected in the West Indies and England. He acknowledged that the West Indies tour will present unique challenges but said the squad has trained specifically for those conditions.

Regarding England, he pointed out that several Pakistani players have county cricket experience, which should help the team adapt quickly. Speaking about his own batting philosophy, Babar said he always puts the team’s needs above personal milestones. Whether the situation demands aggressive stroke play or patient defensive batting, his focus remains on contributing in the manner that benefits Pakistan the most.

Babar Azam also addressed criticism and public expectations, saying constructive feedback is always valuable while unnecessary negativity should be ignored. He encouraged young cricketers to believe in themselves, remain patient, and continue working hard because consistent routines and continuous improvement eventually lead to success. He concluded by thanking Pakistan’s cricket fans for their unwavering support and urged them to continue standing behind the team during the upcoming assignments.
