Beijing (GNP): Artificial intelligence-generated “digital twins” could help doctors better understand how individual patients respond to different treatments, according to a leading US healthcare executive speaking at the Global Health Summit.
Dr Marcela del Carmen, president of Massachusetts General Hospital and executive vice president of Mass General Brigham, shared her perspective on the future of healthcare as AI becomes increasingly integrated into clinical care during an interview with CGTN’s Health Talk.
She said AI is helping doctors anticipate potential health risks and provide more personalised treatment options for patients.
Dr del Carmen explained that digital twins, AI-generated models of individual patients, can help clinicians assess the potential effectiveness and side effects of different treatments before they are administered.

Del Carmen also serves as a professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive biology at Harvard Medical School, bringing both clinical and academic perspectives to the discussion on AI’s growing role in medicine.
Looking beyond the technology itself, she highlighted the progress China has made in science and innovation, pointing to the country’s advancements as part of the broader global push in healthcare research.
Del Carmen emphasised the importance of international collaboration in advancing global healthcare, noting that shared knowledge and cross-border cooperation would be key to translating AI innovations like digital twins into real-world patient benefits.
