Washington (GNP): President Donald Trump used his closing campaign speech on Monday to renew a $5,000 payment pledge for American adults, just hours before voters head to the polls in the midterm elections.
Speaking in Washington, DC, he said the payment, branded the “Trump Dividend”, would go to every adult citizen if Republicans keep control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Trump argues that tariff revenue would pay for the scheme, which he presents as a dividend from America’s economic success. However, independent fact-checkers estimate that paying roughly 245 million adult citizens would cost around $1.2 trillion. That is substantially more than tariffs bring in, and the plan would also need congressional approval. No detailed mechanism for funding or distributing the payments has been outlined.
The pledge came as Trump openly acknowledged that history is against his party. He noted that the president’s party usually loses ground in midterm elections, but said Republicans had given this contest a strong shot.
He then turned to his economic record, describing the United States as entering a golden age. He pointed to tax cuts, border policies and higher domestic oil and natural gas production as proof that he had delivered on his promises.
Against that backdrop, he warned of what a Democratic victory would mean. He claimed it would bring higher taxes, open borders and restrictions on the oil and gas industry. He described the Democratic candidates as the most extreme and dangerous slate in American history, and suggested their policies could trigger a depression similar to the 1929 collapse.
Before reaching those points, Trump spent around 20 minutes on renovation work at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and other beautification projects in the capital. The emphasis drew criticism from Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, who called the closing message pathetic. He accused Trump of ignoring voters’ concerns over the cost of living and the war with Iran.

Trump also signalled how he would handle a Democratic-controlled Congress. In a podcast interview, he said he would veto everything if Republicans lost, although he suggested that deals with Democrats might follow later.
The stakes are high for both parties. The result will decide whether Republicans retain control of Congress or Democrats gain the power to challenge Trump’s policies, investigate his administration and influence government appointments.
Trump said, “This is the most important midterm, I believe, in our lifetime.”
