Pak, Malaysia reiterate resolve to strengthen ties

Islamabad (GNP):  Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif held a warm phone conversation this afternoon with Malaysia Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, primarily to convey his condolences on the passing of Anwar’s elder brother.

Sharif offered prayers for the departed and expressed support for Anwar Ibrahim and his family during this difficult time. In response, the Malaysian Prime Minister thanked Sharif for his condolences and well wishes.

During the call, both leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening bilateral ties between Pakistan and Malaysia, particularly in economic cooperation.

Pakistan-Malaysia relations are built on mutual trust, respect, shared faith, cultural affinity, and expanding economic collaboration. Sharif’s visit to Malaysia from October 5-7, 2025, marked a significant milestone in the two countries’ growing relationship, with a joint statement issued at its conclusion reaffirming the strength of their partnership and outlining a comprehensive roadmap for deeper cooperation.

Pakistan’s longstanding role as a sectoral Dialogue Partner of ASEAN further supports its engagement with Southeast Asia, offering structured avenues for collaboration with Malaysia within the ASEAN framework. Bilateral trade between the two countries currently stands at approximately $1.5 billion annually.

Both nations are exploring new areas of cooperation under the framework of CPEC connectivity and ASEAN integration, with engagement extending beyond traditional diplomacy into fields such as artificial intelligence, climate change, renewable energy, halal food, and interfaith harmony.
