Washington (GNP): Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump on Friday agreed to build a constructive relationship of strategic stability based on respect, fairness and reciprocity.
The consensus was reached during a tea chat at the White House attended by Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, and Trump and his wife, Melania Trump.
Xi said the trip to Washington marked his first state visit to the United States in eleven years, during which the two sides added new substance to their vision for China-US relations.
He said the two sides agreed to jointly build a constructive relationship of strategic stability, while also achieving mutually beneficial outcomes in the economic and trade fields that would be welcomed by the people of both countries and the wider international community.
Xi said the future of China-US relations remains bright and reflects the trend of history, adding that the road ahead is usually tortuous, with difficulties and challenges bound to arise as part of that progress.
He said he was willing to work with Trump to write a splendid chapter in the annals of China-US relations, guided by courage and a sense of responsibility toward history.
Trump described Xi’s state visit as constructive and very successful, saying the two sides held in-depth exchanges on China-US relations as well as major international and regional issues, producing positive outcomes for both countries.
He said he looked forward to maintaining close contact with Xi and jointly guiding the future development of China-US relations.
Following the tea chat, Xi and Peng, accompanied by Trump and Melania, visited the US National Archives, where they were briefed on its exhibits after walking together into the central hall.

Xi said the archives carry the wisdom of past generations and offer insights for the future, noting that over the past 250 years, the American people have pursued the American Dream and built a prosperous nation on the North American continent.
He said the Chinese people, inheriting 5,000 years of Chinese civilisation, continue to make new achievements on their journey toward the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation.
Xi said that while China and the United States are two distinctive countries with different histories, cultures, social systems and development paths, the people of both nations share the same aspiration for a better life despite these differences.
He said that if the two countries recognise and respect their differences, deepen mutual understanding, learn from each other, seek common ground, expand areas of cooperation and properly manage disagreements, China-US relations will enjoy steady and sustained growth.
Xi Jinping said, “I am willing to work with President Trump to write a splendid chapter in the annals of China-US relations.”
