New York (GNP): FIFA has opened a formal investigation into the chaotic scenes that erupted at the final whistle of the 2026 World Cup final at MetLife Stadium, after members of the Argentina squad became embroiled in physical altercations with Spain players celebrating their 1-0 title-winning victory on Sunday.
Football’s global governing body confirmed that its disciplinary committee has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to examine the conduct of those involved, with any player, coach or the Argentine Football Association itself potentially facing sanctions ranging from suspension to financial penalties.
The trouble began moments after referee Slavko Vincic blew the final whistle, as several Argentina players sank to the ground in defeat while Spain’s squad rushed onto the pitch in celebration. Manchester City midfielder Rodri, substituted earlier in extra time, ran from the dugout to join his teammates and was confronted by Argentina defender Nahuel Molina. The exchange escalated quickly, drawing in Spain’s Eric Garcia and Dani Olmo, along with Argentina’s Leandro Paredes, Thiago Almada and assistant coach Roberto Ayala. Unused Spain substitute Gavi was pushed to the ground during the melee, while Paredes was seen making contact with Garcia’s throat area.
FIFA’s match-day reporting system had briefly listed Paredes as sent off for the incident. Still, the red card was subsequently withdrawn, and FIFA told the BBC that no disciplinary action had been taken at the moment. Argentina had already had midfielder Enzo Fernandez dismissed earlier in stoppage time after a second yellow card.

Former England captain Alan Shearer, working as a pundit for the BBC’s broadcast, said Paredes had thrown “two or three haymakers into someone’s face.” Former goalkeeper Joe Hart, also part of the coverage, described the scenes as “disgusting behaviour.” Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni, who attempted to defuse the situation on the pitch, told reporters afterward that his team knew how to lose” and stood by their conduct in defeat.
Under Article 13 of FIFA’s disciplinary code, which governs offensive conduct and fair play, the prosecutor’s inquiry will assess whether the individuals involved violated basic standards of decent conduct or brought the sport into disrepute. FIFA has previously invoked this article in high-profile cases, including the three-year ban imposed on former Spanish football federation president Luis Rubiales, and the four-month suspension given to Uruguay’s Luis Suarez following the 2014 World Cup.
The investigation adds to mounting scrutiny of the Argentine squad’s conduct during this tournament. FIFA had already begun disciplinary proceedings against the team after players displayed a banner referencing Argentina’s claim to the Falkland Islands following their semi-final win over England — a repeat of conduct that drew a fine during a 2014 friendly against Slovenia. The AFA was also fined after celebratory conduct following its 2022 World Cup final win, and individual players, including goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, have faced separate sanctions in recent years for on-field misconduct.

FIFA has not set a timeline for the conclusion of the prosecutor’s review.
The post-final scenes underscore a recurring pattern in Argentina’s recent tournament conduct, where on-field triumphalism and confrontational celebration have repeatedly drawn FIFA’s disciplinary attention — from the 2022 final controversy to the ongoing Falklands banner case from this tournament’s semi-final stage. Should FIFA’s prosecutor pursue charges under Article 13 rather than treating the incident as isolated misconduct, the case could carry broader implications, given that this provision has historically been applied only in the sport’s most serious conduct cases. For a federation already under review for a separate incident earlier in the tournament, the cumulative disciplinary exposure may factor into how firmly FIFA responds this time.
