NEW YORK (GNP): SOFI Report was launched during the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF 2026), where the President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) urged global leaders to take concrete action to ensure affordable access to healthy diets.
Addressing the launch of the 2026 State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) Report, the ECOSOC President said that food insecurity extends beyond nutrition and reflects deeper challenges linked to poverty, inequality, healthcare, education, and economic opportunity.
He emphasized that when families cannot afford healthy food, the issue becomes a broader development challenge rather than solely a nutrition concern. According to his remarks, improving access to nutritious food is essential to protecting human dignity and achieving sustainable development.
The ECOSOC President called on governments and international organizations to transform policy analysis into practical action. He stressed that affordable healthy diets are fundamental to delivering on the commitments of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger).
The SOFI Report is one of the United Nations’ principal annual assessments of global food security and nutrition. It provides governments and policymakers with updated data on hunger, malnutrition, food affordability, and progress toward ending hunger worldwide.
The report is expected to support evidence-based policymaking by identifying challenges affecting food systems and highlighting areas where stronger international cooperation and investment are needed. United Nations agencies continue to emphasize that global food security remains closely linked to economic resilience, climate change, conflict, and sustainable agricultural development.
Participants at the High-level Political Forum discussed the importance of strengthening national food systems, improving nutrition policies, and expanding social protection measures to ensure that vulnerable populations have access to affordable and healthy food.

The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) Report is published annually by several United Nations agencies, including the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), UNICEF, the World Food Programme (WFP), and the World Health Organization (WHO). The report serves as one of the world’s leading references on global hunger and nutrition trends.
The High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development is the United Nations’ primary platform for reviewing progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Discussions at HLPF help guide international cooperation on poverty reduction, food security, climate action, health, education, and sustainable development.
An affordable and nutritious diet remains central to achieving SDG 2: Zero Hunger, while also contributing to improved health outcomes, economic productivity, and social stability worldwide.
The ECOSOC President noted that ensuring affordable access to healthy diets requires coordinated action from governments, international organizations, financial institutions, and the private sector. He emphasized that strengthening food systems and improving policy implementation are essential to reducing hunger while addressing the social and economic factors that contribute to food insecurity.
The launch of the SOFI Report also reinforces the importance of international cooperation in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. As countries continue to face challenges related to inflation, climate change, conflicts, and supply chain disruptions, the report provides policymakers with evidence-based recommendations to support food security, improve nutrition outcomes, and build more resilient and sustainable food systems worldwide.
