California (GNP): Spain booked their place in the World Cup round of 16 with a commanding 3-0 win over Austria in Saturday’s round of 32 clash at Los Angeles Stadium, never looking troubled as they dismantled their opponents from start to finish.
Mikel Oyarzabal scored twice and Pedro Porro added a header as the reigning European champions dominated possession throughout, cutting through Austria’s back line with ease in front of a crowd that included actors Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem, along with singer Rosalía.
The margin of victory could easily have been wider — a Spanish goal was ruled out, and a free kick came back off the crossbar — and the win now sets up a promising round-of-16 matchup against either Portugal or Croatia. SoFi Stadium was awash in red for the occasion, with anticipation running high as a genuine World Cup contender made its first appearance in the city.
Spain built pressure steadily as the first half progressed, generating several openings once play resumed after the opening water break. Marc Cucurella appeared to have converted from a Lamine Yamal corner, but the goal was disallowed after Pau Cubarsi was ruled to have interfered with Austria’s goalkeeper. Shortly after, Austrian keeper Alexander Schlager produced an excellent save, tipping a low effort from Oyarzabal wide of the post.
Austria’s resistance finally gave way in the 36th minute, when Pedri switched play out to Cucurella on the left, who delivered a cross that Oyarzabal calmly guided past the goalkeeper with the side of his foot.
Spain continued to press from there, with Yamal causing persistent trouble down the right side. A free kick from Alex Baena rattled the crossbar, and Yamal’s follow-up attempt from close range was denied by another strong save. Austria had one promising moment of their own when Romano Schmid found an unmarked Stefan Posch arriving late into the box, but a poor touch cost him possession before he could get a shot away.
Second Half of the FIFA World Cup
Coming out of the break, Spain kept pushing without managing to put the match beyond doubt right away. Austria introduced two tall forwards, Sasa Kalajdzic and Marko Arnautovic, and began going long, with Kalajdzic heading one chance over the crossbar.
Spain’s second goal arrived in the 66th minute, as Baena floated a cross toward Pedro Porro, who headed home his first international goal. Austria managed some determined defending to keep the score from growing further, including a goal-line clearance by David Alaba to deny Yamal, who was withdrawn shortly afterward to rest.

As the match wound down, Spain kept the ball moving confidently around the pitch, drawing appreciative “olé” chants from the stands, with focus already shifting toward a tougher fixture in Dallas on Monday. In the 89th minute, a precise ball in from Cucurella found Oyarzabal completely free inside the box, and he finished calmly for his second of the night.
Austria’s clearest chance to get on the scoresheet came in the second half, when a well-placed cross was met by Kalajdzic’s header, but the ball sailed over the crossbar. Having barely advanced past the group stage thanks to a stoppage-time equalizer against Algeria, Austria found few clear openings against a Spanish side that stayed composed on the ball and disciplined defensively, extending their run without conceding.
