The first session of high level talks under the framework of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding concluded in Burgenstock, Switzerland, with the participation of representatives from the Islamic Republic of Iran, the United States of America, and the two mediating parties, the State of Qatar and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The summit brought together some of the world’s most important diplomatic players under one roof in a genuine effort to move beyond the Islamabad MoU and toward a comprehensive and lasting resolution of the conflict.
Lake Lucerne Summit 2026 Conducted in Positive Atmosphere
The Lake Lucerne Summit was conducted in a positive and constructive atmosphere. Encouraging progress has been made, including the creation of a mechanism for further technical talks. Building on the MoU, the parties have agreed to the establishment of a High Level Committee, which will provide political oversight on the mediation. Chief negotiators will report regularly to the High Level Committee and lead working groups focused on nuclear, sanctions, and a monitoring and dispute resolution group to ensure the effective implementation of the MoU, and on other matters.
The negotiations were led on the American side by US Vice President JD Vance and special envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, while Iran was represented by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and other senior officials. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan and Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani both attended in their capacity as mediators, underlining the central and indispensable role that both countries have played in facilitating this historic diplomatic process.
US and Iran agreed to a roadmap toward a final deal within 60 days, with technical level talks to continue for the rest of the week in Switzerland. The two sides also agreed to set up a communication line to avoid incidents in the Strait of Hormuz. These practical confidence building measures reflect the genuine progress that was achieved during the Lake Lucerne Summit 2026 Qatar Pakistan process and signal a meaningful shift in the tone and substance of relations between Washington and Tehran.
Lake Lucerne Summit 2026 Delivers Major Progress on Lebanon
Beyond the bilateral US Iran issues, the Lake Lucerne Summit 2026 Qatar Pakistan talks also delivered significant progress on the situation in Lebanon. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said tireless Pakistani and Qatari mediation had delivered major progress to end the Lebanon War, noting that oil and petrochemical exports are waived, the blockade lifted, some frozen assets released, and a major reconstruction and development plan launched for Iran.

The joint statement also confirmed that the parties agreed on the creation of a deconfliction cell, facilitated by the mediators, to ensure the termination of military operations in Lebanon in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding. This is a particularly significant development given the ongoing tensions in southern Lebanon involving Israel and Hezbollah, which had threatened to derail the talks earlier in the day.
The State of Qatar and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan expressed their sincere appreciation to the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran for their ongoing commitment to diplomacy and a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Both mediating countries also commended the brotherly and friendly nations that provided continued support and valuable contributions throughout the negotiation process.
The Lake Lucerne Summit 2026 Qatar Pakistan mediation effort stands as one of the most significant diplomatic achievements of the year, demonstrating that patient, principled, and persistent diplomacy can produce real and meaningful results even in the most complex and deeply entrenched international conflicts.
