Islamabad (GNP): Yawar Hussain, a BS-20 officer of the Pakistan Administrative Service (PAS), has taken over as Director General of the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) following his official transfer and posting by the Establishment Division, Government of Pakistan. He has been assigned to the PSB under the Inter Provincial Coordination (IPC) Division on a deputation basis with immediate effect, bringing with him a wealth of administrative experience gathered during his previous posting under the Government of Punjab.
Upon taking office, Yawar Hussain outlined his priorities, placing sports development at the heart of his agenda. He spoke of his intention to strengthen institutional support structures for athletes, coaches, and sports federations across the country, while stressing the critical importance of grassroots-level development, early talent identification, capacity building, and the upgrading of training facilities — all aimed at enabling Pakistani athletes to perform at their best on regional and international platforms.
He also reaffirmed the PSB’s commitment to forging closer working relationships with national sports federations, provincial governments, educational institutions, and other key stakeholders, with the shared goal of expanding opportunities for young athletes and nurturing a thriving sports culture throughout Pakistan.
PSB officials and staff extended a warm welcome to the incoming Director General, expressing confidence that his administrative background and leadership qualities would prove instrumental in driving the Board’s mission forward.
The Pakistan Sports Board was originally constituted under the Ministry of Education through the Sports (Development and Control) Ordinance of 1962, established as a corporate body tasked with promoting and developing nationally uniform standards of sporting competition aligned with international benchmarks, and with regulating sports activity across the country.

Following the creation of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in July 1977, administrative oversight of the PSB was transferred accordingly. After the devolution of the Sports Ministry in June 2011, the Board came under the administrative purview of the Ministry of Inter Provincial Coordination, where it remains today.
As Pakistan’s premier sports authority, the PSB serves both as a regulatory body and as an executing agency for government sports policies. It oversees the activities of affiliated National Sports Federations — currently numbering 41, alongside three affiliated departments — each of which is independently responsible for the promotion and development of its respective sport.
The PSB maintains an extensive portfolio of sporting infrastructure at its headquarters and at Coaching Centers located at provincial headquarters. These facilities serve as venues for national training camps and the staging of domestic and international competitions, and are additionally made available to the general public on a standard membership basis.
