Why CSK and KKR players wear black armbands today

ISLAMABAD GNP:- Players and support staff of Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders took the field wearing black armbands during their IPL 2026 clash at the Chepauk Stadium on April 14, prompting questions about the gesture.

During the 22nd match of the Indian Premier League, both teams were seen with black bands on their sleeves as a mark of respect. Shortly after play began, Kolkata Knight Riders confirmed that the tribute was in memory of former Indian cricketer CK Gopinath, who passed away on April 9.

Gopinath was a significant figure in Indian cricket history and a member of India’s first-ever Test-winning side in 1952. Known for his contributions to cricket in Madras, he played a vital role both on and off the field. As a player, he led his domestic team with distinction and scored 4,259 runs in 60 first-class matches.

One of his most memorable achievements came during the 1954-55 Ranji Trophy final, where his century helped Madras secure their maiden title. His performances in domestic cricket cemented his legacy as a key figure in the region’s cricketing growth.

At the international level, Gopinath represented India in eight Test matches between 1951 and 1960. He made an impressive start to his career with scores of 50 not out and 42 against England, showcasing his batting ability early on.

Following his playing days, he continued to serve Indian cricket in various roles. He worked as a selector, eventually becoming chairman of selectors, and also managed the Indian team during their 1979 tour of England, contributing significantly to the game’s administration.

Coming back to the match, KKR chose to field first against CSK. Both teams entered the game struggling in the IPL 2026 standings, occupying the bottom two spots on the table. The Ajinkya Rahane-led KKR were placed tenth and were yet to register a win in the ongoing season, while CSK had recently secured their first victory against Delhi Capitals.

At the time of writing, Chennai Super Kings were 102 for 2 after 10 overs, putting together a steady performance in a crucial match for both sides.
