Finance Minister and Canada Envoy discuss areas of cooperation

They discussed the current global economic crisis and the economic situation of Pakistan.

Islamabad, 14 March 2023 (GNP): The Federal Finance Minister, Senator Mohammad Ishaq  Dar, and the High Commissioner of Canada, Leslie Scanlon, exchanged views on the economic situation of Pakistan and explored areas of cooperation to enhance friendly bilateral relations.

They discussed the current global economic crisis and the economic situation of Pakistan. The Finance Minister updated Leslie Scanlon on Pakistan’s economic outlook and the challenges the country has faced, including significant losses due to last year’s devastating floods. He informed her that the government of Pakistan had made tough decisions to reduce the current and budgetary account deficits and increase revenue by adopting new policies.

He also mentioned the government’s formulation of policies and programs in key sectors, such as the energy sector, to promote economic stability and growth. Additionally, he mentioned the ongoing talks with the IMF Mission and the government’s commitment to fulfilling international obligations to remain in the existing IMF plan.

Leslie Scanlon, the High Commissioner of Canada, emphasized the need to strengthen cordial relations between the two states through cooperation in trade, investment, and climate resilience. She expressed support for Climate Resilience and the rebuilding of  Pakistan through the newly developed Strategy for the region. She reiterated her country’s support for the socioeconomic policies of the Government of Pakistan.

The Finance Minister expressed gratitude for the Canadian Government’s support for flood victims in Pakistan and showed full support for strengthening bilateral economic relations.
