Why Did Negligence Cost 14 Infants Their Lives

Islamabad (GNP): That is the question being asked across the country after a fire in the gynaecology ward of a major public hospital in Islamabad killed 14 infants, triggering an outpouring of grief and demands for accountability.

The blaze broke out early Wednesday morning and is being attributed to a malfunction in the ward’s air conditioning unit. An inquiry into the incident has since been launched, with a senior official stepping aside pending the investigation’s outcome.

The tragedy has drawn comparisons to an earlier incident at the same hospital, where patients died amid non-functional cooling systems during a heatwave. Concerns over inadequate infrastructure and oversight at the facility had been raised in the past, including reports of protests by hospital staff over unresolved maintenance issues and unmet commitments to improve ward conditions.

For many observers, Wednesday’s fire has revived long-standing worries that earlier warnings about the hospital’s safety standards went unaddressed, deepening the question of how such a tragedy was allowed to happen again.

In the hours following the fire, public figures across politics and journalism voiced anguish and outrage, calling the deaths preventable and demanding that those responsible be held accountable.

Several described the incident as a result of negligence rather than misfortune, arguing that basic safety measures could have spared the infants’ lives. Others called for a transparent, high-level investigation, warning that removing a single official would not address the deeper administrative failures being described.

The public reaction has centred on a shared sense of grief mixed with anger, with many pointing to the vulnerability of newborns entrusted to hospital care as what makes the loss especially painful. Some voices in the public discourse cautioned against the tragedy being reduced to routine expressions of condolence and compensation, insisting instead on structural reform to prevent similar incidents at public hospitals in the future.

As the investigation proceeds, families of the deceased infants are awaiting answers on what led to the fire and why safety measures failed to prevent it. Reflecting the broader public mood, Says a concerned citizen who followed the tragedy closely, “No parent should have to bury a child taken by something that could have been prevented.”
