Wang Yi Urges Taliban to Act on Terror Groups at Baku Summit

Baku (GNP): China has urged Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities to take concrete and effective measures against terrorist groups operating on Afghan territory. It says eliminating such threats is essential for peace and stability across the region.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the appeal at the seventh summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), held in the Azerbaijani capital. Addressing regional leaders, he outlined a four-point initiative aimed at strengthening security cooperation, political dialogue and economic development across Asia.

Within that framework, Wang described Afghanistan as an important part of Asia’s regional security structure. He said instability in the country could have wider consequences for its neighbours.

He therefore called on the Taliban administration to adopt practical steps to eliminate terrorist groups. He also asked it to ensure that Afghan territory does not become a source of security threats for the region.

Beijing has voiced similar concerns before. It has repeatedly pointed to extremist organisations operating in Afghanistan, particularly groups that could pose cross-border security risks.

Alongside the security message, Wang stressed the need for coordinated regional efforts to support Afghanistan’s economic recovery and humanitarian needs. He urged neighbouring countries and international partners to maintain assistance while encouraging the conditions needed for sustainable development.

This combined approach reflects China’s wider policy towards Kabul. Beijing has kept up informal diplomatic and economic engagement with the Taliban authorities since their return to power in August 2021. At the same time, it continues to treat counterterrorism commitments as an important part of those relations.

China maintains that effective action against terrorist organisations, together with regional cooperation, is necessary to build lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan. Afghanistan’s security situation remains a concern for regional governments that want to prevent terrorism and strengthen cross-border cooperation.
