Washington (GNP): American AI developers can now give the British government early access to their models for safety testing without running afoul of the Trump administration, according to a report published on Sunday.
The report says Washington has reversed an earlier decision. That decision had asked developers such as OpenAI and Anthropic not to share new AI models with Britain’s AI Security Institute before their release.
The change matters because of what the Institute does. It was set up after the world’s first AI safety summit in 2023 and tests the most advanced AI models to assess their capabilities and the risk of misuse.
With the earlier request lifted, US companies have more room to work with the British body. This could allow models to be checked before they reach the public.

The shift also points to a softer stance on international AI safety efforts. It comes as policymakers around the world grapple with how to oversee an increasingly powerful technology.
It stands out because of President Donald Trump’s record on the issue. He has repeatedly dismissed calls for binding safety requirements on AI developers, and his administration’s position now appears to be changing.
