US Centcom chief acknowledges Pakistan’s efforts for regional peace

US Centcom Chief Applauds Pakistan's Pursuit of Regional Peace in a Meeting with COAS Asim Munir.

Rawalpindi, July 24, 2023 (GNP): General Michael Erik Kurilla, Chief of the United States Central Command (Centcom), expressed recognition for Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to establish peace and stability in the region during a meeting with Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Asim Munir on Monday.

The Inter-Service Public Relations (ISPR) reported that Gen Kurilla appreciated the Pakistan Army’s successes in combating terrorism and its persistent work towards regional peace and stability. The meeting, held in Rawalpindi, covered mutual interests, regional security concerns, and defense cooperation.

According to the ISPR, both sides voiced their wish to intensify bilateral relations across all sectors, signifying their mutual dedication to regional stability and cooperation.

The meeting followed recent calls from both countries to the interim Afghan government to prevent their territory from being used as a safe haven for terrorist attacks. Last week, US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasized the Taliban’s responsibility to prevent Afghanistan from serving as a launch pad for terrorist activities.

The statement from the US State Department followed the Pakistan Army’s accusation of Kabul for the rise in militancy, alleging that “safe havens and liberty of action” provided by Kabul, together with the most recent weapons available to militants from Afghanistan, allowed them to conduct terrorist operations inside Pakistan.
