US and South Korea to Deter North Korea

The Washington Declaration between the US and South Korea will strengthen co-operation in deterring North Korea's attack.

Washington, 27 April 2023 (GNP): The US has committed to assist South Korea regarding its nuclear strategy in the event of a conflict with North Korea. This move was prompted by concerns over North Korea’s expanding stockpile of missiles and explosives.

During the opening statements in the Oval Office before the meeting with President Biden, South Korean President Yoon stated that the alliance between the US and South Korea is not just a contractual agreement but an everlasting partnership based on shared universal values of freedom and democracy. He also hinted at the recent controversy over surveillance and stated that any issues between the two countries can be resolved through cooperation.

The relationship between our two nations is a remarkable success story, born out of an alliance formed during times of war and thriving in times of peace. I am pleased to declare that the alliance between the Republic of Korea and the United States, which has been in place for 70 years, is currently stronger than it has ever been.

According to a report, Beijing’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Mao Ning, described the US decision to send a nuclear-armed submarine to their country, the first such visit in over 40 years, as a ploy to create tension and driven by selfish geopolitical motives.

During a joint press conference with South Korean President Yoon, President Biden stated that a nuclear attack by North Korea against the United States, its allies, or partners is not acceptable, and any regime that takes such an action will face consequences. The two leaders signed an agreement called the Washington Declaration, which aims to strengthen deterrence against North Korea’s escalating behavior. The agreement involves close consultation between the US and South Korea to address the situation. Biden used the initials D.P.R.K. to refer to North Korea.

Under the new agreement, the United States and South Korea will establish a Nuclear Consultative Group to work together on military responses to North Korea. The US has also promised to consult with South Korea before taking any action that involves the use of nuclear weapons in response to North Korea’s aggression.

South Korean President Yoon’s visit to the US happened at a tense time in the relationship between the two longtime allies. Leaked disclosures revealed that the US had intercepted private conversations within South Korea’s national security council. Classified documents that were made public recently contained discussions among top South Korean officials about American pressure to supply artillery ammunition to Ukraine, which goes against South Korea’s policy of not arming combatants engaged in active wars.

South Korea has not directly provided weapons to Ukraine but has provided humanitarian aid. They have considered selling 155-millimeter artillery shells to the United States as long as the US is the “end user.” Recently leaked documents revealed that top South Korean officials discussed the possibility of selling shells to Poland under the same condition, knowing that they would eventually be passed on to Ukraine.
