UNHCR Names Noriko Takagi as New Representative in Pakistan

Islamabad (GNP):  The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has named Noriko Takagi as its new Representative in Pakistan. She reached the country earlier this month to start her duties and replaces Philippa Candler.

Takagi has nearly 30 years of experience in humanitarian and protection work, programme management and partnership-building in Asia, Africa and Europe, including a posting at UNHCR Headquarters in Geneva.

Immediately before this appointment, she was UNHCR Representative in Myanmar from 2023 to 2026. Earlier roles include Senior Programme Coordinator at the agency’s Regional Bureau in Bangkok, Deputy Representative in Myanmar and Senior Regional Programme Officer in Budapest.

She has also worked in the field in Tanzania and Nepal. Before she joined UNHCR in 1997, she worked with development organisations in Uganda.

Takagi said she is excited to begin her new role and looks forward to working closely with the Government and UNHCR’s partners to support refugees and asylum-seekers.

She expressed confidence that, together, they can continue efforts to meet refugees’ protection needs and help them find solutions for a better future.
