Islamabad (GNP): Macky Sall, a candidate for UN Secretary-General, met with Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif at the Prime Minister House in Islamabad.
During the meeting, PM Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s continued support for multilateralism and the central role of the United Nations in addressing global issues. He expressed hope that the next UN leadership would work to advance the organization’s three core pillars — peace and security, development, and human rights — in a balanced way.
The prime minister also reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the principles of the UN Charter, faithful implementation of Security Council resolutions, and respect for international law as essential foundations for global peace and stability.
For his part, Sall praised Pakistan’s long-standing contributions to the United Nations and acknowledged the country’s constructive role in international peace efforts.
Background on the Nomination
According to a spokesperson for the President of the UN General Assembly, Sall’s candidacy for Secretary-General was formally submitted by Burundi, which presented the nomination papers earlier that day. La Neice Collins, spokesperson for the 80th President of the General Assembly, confirmed the nomination to reporters, noting that the President of the General Assembly and the President of the Security Council would jointly notify member states shortly.
Sall, the former president of Senegal, joins two other officially declared candidates in the race: Michelle Bachelet Jeria of Chile and Rafael Mariano Grossi of Argentina.
