Washington (GNP): US President Donald Trump has said Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attack a NATO member, while dismissing reports that CIA Director John Ratcliffe travelled to Moscow specifically to warn Russian officials against such an attack. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said Putin is not going to attack NATO territory, framing the Russian leader’s intentions as clear on this point.
Trump elaborated on the matter in a separate interview with Axios, saying Ratcliffe’s recent trip to Russia was routine rather than tied to any particular warning. He described Ratcliffe’s meetings with his Russian intelligence counterpart as occurring roughly once or twice a year, characterized by a good working relationship, and said nothing about the visit was out of the ordinary.
Trump’s remarks followed a Wall Street Journal report claiming Ratcliffe had travelled to Moscow to caution Russian officials against any move on a NATO member state. Two sources familiar with the meeting said Ratcliffe did raise the possibility of a Russian operation against a NATO country during the discussions, though it remained unclear whether that was the central purpose of the trip. One source added that the conversation also touched on Russia’s support for Iran, a matter that has increasingly strained relations between Washington and Moscow.

The exchange comes against a backdrop of sustained monitoring by European and US intelligence agencies of Russian sabotage and gray-zone activity across Europe, operations generally aimed at undermining NATO unity and eroding member states’ support for Ukraine. Among the scenarios under close watch is the possibility that Russia could use a Ukrainian drone in a false-flag attack on a country in eastern or northeastern Europe, designed to obscure Moscow’s role in the incident.
Despite the conflicting accounts of Ratcliffe’s Moscow visit, Trump maintained his position that a direct Russian attack on NATO territory remains unlikely, reinforcing his broader stance of downplaying escalation concerns between Washington and Moscow.
