Spain Chase Return to the World Cup Final Four against France

ISLAMABAD (GNP): Spain and France, the two highest-ranked sides in Europe, meet on Tuesday at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas, for the first semi-final of the FIFA World Cup 2026, with a place in Sunday’s final at stake. The second semi-final follows on Thursday in Atlanta, where Argentina takes on England.

The Dallas meeting marks the third time in three years that the two sides have clashed in a major tournament, following Spain’s win in the Euro 2024 semi-final and a high-scoring Nations League semi-final that Spain also won last year. For La Roja, however, Tuesday’s game carries extra weight: it is Spain’s first appearance in a World Cup semi-final since they lifted the trophy in 2010, sixteen years ago.

Contrasting Roads To Dallas

France arrive as the tournament’s most consistent side, having scored freely while conceding sparingly through six matches. Les Bleus sealed their semi-final berth with a comfortable win over Morocco, a game in which Kylian Mbappe was directly involved in both goals despite missing a penalty. Coach Didier Deschamps’ side have been built on rhythm and defensive discipline in equal measure, and they go into the match as bookmakers’ favourites.

Spain’s path has been narrower but no less impressive. La Roja needed a late goal from substitute Mikel Merino to see off Portugal in the round of sixteen, then repeated the trick in the quarter-final against Belgium, where Fabian Ruiz’s opener was cancelled out by Charles De Ketelaere before Merino struck the winner in the 88th minute for a 2-1 victory. Belgium’s goal was the first Spain had conceded all tournament, but their composure in tight matches has become a defining trait of this squad.

France’s main selection concern surrounds midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, sidelined for the last two matches, with Manu Kone deputising capably in his absence. Mbappe picked up a knock to the ankle against Morocco but is expected to start.

For Spain, the return of winger Nico Williams off the bench against Belgium was a welcome boost, though Yeremy Pino and Victor Munoz remain doubts for the semi-final.

The two nations have met 38 times across their footballing history, with Spain holding a narrow advantage of 18 wins to France’s 13, and seven draws. Their only previous World Cup meeting came in 2006, when France won 3-1 in the round of sixteen. More recently, Spain has had the upper hand, winning both the Euro 2024 semi-final and last year’s Nations League semi-final in Stuttgart, the latter finishing 5-4.

Players To Watch

Mbappe has been directly involved in eleven goals so far, including eight of his own, and remains the player most likely to unlock a well-organised Spanish defence. On the other side, Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal carries Spain’s attacking threat and was on the winning side against Mbappe’s France in the Euro 2024 semi-final, scoring in that match. Merino, meanwhile, has scored the winning goal in each of Spain’s last two knockout matches and will look to continue that habit against the tournament favourites.

The winner in Dallas advances to the World Cup final, where they will meet the victor of Thursday’s semi-final between Argentina and England in Atlanta. For Spain, victory would complete a return to the game’s biggest stage for the first time since their triumphant 2010 campaign. For France, a win would take them to a third consecutive World Cup final.
