London (GNP): Princess Diana’s iconic black revenge dress, worn during one of the most scrutinised moments of her public life, is going under the hammer for the first time in nearly three decades, with Sotheby’s expecting the piece to fetch up to 300,000 US dollars at its December auction.
The custom-made silk evening dress, designed by Christina Stambolian, became one of the defining fashion moments of Diana’s life when she wore it to a fundraising dinner at London’s Serpentine Gallery in June 1994. Diana arrived at the event just hours after a television documentary in which Charles, then Prince of Wales, publicly acknowledged that he had been unfaithful during their marriage.
Her dramatic entrance in the strapless black silk gown, paired with a royal jewel, a black clutch and black heels, produced an image that would go on to become one of the most recognisable moments of her public life. The media swiftly dubbed the outfit the revenge dress, and it has remained a cultural touchstone ever since.
Sotheby’s confirmed that the sale, scheduled for December 9, marks the first time the dress has returned to auction since 1997, when Diana sold 79 dresses from her wardrobe to raise money for charity.
Morgane Halimi, Sotheby’s global head of handbags and fashion, said Diana understood that fashion could communicate a powerful message, describing how the princess turned the dress into one of the most powerful statements she ever made during one of the most emotionally charged episodes of her life. Halimi added that Diana used her choice of clothing to reclaim the narrative for herself, a sentiment that has shaped how the dress is remembered decades later.
According to Sotheby’s, Diana’s stylist at the time, Anna Harvey, recalled that the princess wanted to look a million dollars for the occasion. Diana had originally planned to wear a different outfit that evening but made a last-minute change, choosing the Stambolian gown instead, a decision that would ultimately define the moment far more than any planned alternative could have.
The dress is not the only item connected to that evening to attract collector interest. The Jaguar XJ40 in which Diana arrived at the Serpentine Gallery event was sold at auction earlier this year for 66,250 pounds, underscoring the continued fascination with the details surrounding her appearance that night.

The revenge dress is expected to command a significantly higher price than the car, though it would not be the first piece from Diana’s wardrobe to achieve a major auction result. In 2023, a black-and-white sheep-patterned sweater worn by Diana sold for 920,000 pounds at a Sotheby’s auction in New York, illustrating the strong and sustained market for items connected to the princess.
The upcoming sale of the revenge dress is likely to renew interest in Diana’s enduring influence on fashion and popular culture, decades after the garment became a symbol of one of the most closely watched periods of her personal life.
