Pakistan’s ranking upgraded in Nuclear Security Index 2023

The majority of the improvements were made to the security of materials and controls, the report stated.

Islamabad, 20 July 2023 (GNP): The Nuclear Security Index 2023, which rates the security of nuclear materials across the world, has upgraded Pakistan’s ranking in the list.

As per the report, the majority of the improvements were made to the security of materials and controls.

The forum ranked Pakistan ahead of India, Iran, and North Korea in terms of its handling of potentially harmful material. This shows that the country had obtained more points since the previous evaluation and secured the number 19 out of a total of 22 states.

In terms of the security of facilities, Pakistan is placed number 32 joined with Russia and Israel, and ahead of India, followed by Iran, Mexico, South Africa, Egypt, North Korea, and some other countries.

The current score of Pakistan is 61 after achieving four points while our neighboring country India managed to score only 52 points.

Pakistan obtained a score of 49 which is 9 digits more than India, scoring 40. On the other hand, Iran gained a score of 29 while North Korea scored 18 points due to its mediocre performance.

The Nuclear Security Index is made up of three dynamic and inclusive rankings that evaluate the condition of nuclear security in 175 states, including Taiwan.

However, this list evaluates the 22 nations with one kilogramme or more of nuclear weapons-usable material, such as highly enriched uranium or separated plutonium, as well as their security measures against the possibility of theft.

It also evaluates 154 countries along with Taiwan with less than one kilogram or of no nuclear weapons-usable materials as well as their support for international efforts to ensure the security of nuclear materials.

Moreover, the nuclear scientist Dr. Samar Mubarakmand said, “The improvement in the nuclear security index shows that Pakistan is a responsible nuclear state.” He claimed that Pakistan had nuclear weapons for more than three decades and that, despite undergoing phases of testing, its nuclear programme had remained safe and secure.

Furthermore, he said that nuclear security was also a condition for the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and that this aspect was also evaluated along with other requirements when Pakistan was taken off the “grey list.”
