Pakistan Condemns Israel's Military Action in Syria, Calls for Withdrawal

New York (GNP): Pakistan has condemned Israel’s continued military actions in Syria and called for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from all occupied Syrian territory, with full respect for the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement.

Ambassador Usman Jadoon, Pakistan’s Acting Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), made the call on Monday at a Security Council briefing on the humanitarian and political situation in Syria. He said Israeli actions violate international law and Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and that they undermine prospects for regional peace and stability.

He also reaffirmed that the occupied Syrian Golan remains Syrian territory under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, including Resolutions 338 and 497.

His remarks come amid growing international concern. Last month, a UN commission investigating Syria raised alarm over Israel’s military activities inside Syrian territory. It warned that certain actions, including the detention of civilians, could amount to war crimes.

In August, Syrian state media reported eight Israeli air strikes on an airbase in north-western Syria. The United States envoy for the region described the strikes as an “unnecessary escalation”.

The tensions trace back to the ousting of former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad. Israel then seized territory in south-western Syria and targeted much of the Syrian military’s heavy weaponry and equipment. Israeli officials had voiced concerns about the background of Syria’s new rulers.

Against this backdrop, Jadoon reiterated Pakistan’s support for Syria’s political transition, national reconciliation and economic recovery. He stressed the importance of preserving the country’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He welcomed renewed diplomatic engagement and efforts to restore national institutions, and said he was optimistic about Syria’s future. He backed the Syrian government’s efforts to ensure an inclusive political transition and welcomed progress in its engagement with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

On outstanding challenges, including the situation in Suweida, he called for dialogue and peaceful engagement that fully respects Syria’s unity and territorial integrity.

Jadoon said sustained international support was essential. In his view, reconstruction, economic revival and continued humanitarian assistance are needed to meet the needs of the Syrian people. He noted that sanctions relief, increased investment and stronger regional and international economic partnerships could give fresh impetus to recovery.

He also stressed the need for continued vigilance against Daesh and other terrorist groups, including foreign terrorist fighters, and expressed support for Syria’s efforts to strengthen its security and national institutions.

Reaffirming the longstanding ties between the two countries, he said Islamabad would remain a steadfast friend and partner of Syria. Pakistan, he added, is committed to strengthening bilateral relations and promoting peace, stability and prosperity for the Syrian people.

Jadoon said, “Israeli actions violate international law and Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
