Islamabad (GNP): Islamabad (GNP): Mohammad Naciri, Chief of Staff to UN Women’s Executive Director, met with Federal Minister for Law, Justice and Human Rights Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar to discuss strengthening the ongoing partnership between Pakistan and UN Women in advancing women’s rights, gender equality, and inclusive governance.
The UN Women delegation also included Country Representative Jamshed M. Kazi and Deputy Country Representative Fahmida Iqbal Khan.
Welcoming the delegation, Tarar acknowledged UN Women’s continued collaboration with Pakistan, highlighting the Ministry of Human Rights’ close work with the organization on gender equality, access to justice, and policies protecting women and girls.
Reviewing Key Policy Initiatives
The discussion covered progress on the draft National Policy on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (EVAWG), developed with UN Women’s technical support through consultations involving provincial governments, civil society, and academia. Tarar reaffirmed the government’s commitment to finalizing a comprehensive policy framework aimed at strengthening prevention, protection, and response mechanisms for women and girls.
Both sides also discussed the upcoming SAARC Conference, recognizing its potential as a regional platform for advancing cooperation on gender equality and inclusive development across South Asia.
Focus on Data and Emerging Issues
Talks also centered on strengthening Pakistan’s gender data systems to support evidence-based policymaking and improve reporting under international frameworks such as CEDAW and the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. The two sides explored further cooperation on women’s economic empowerment, digital inclusion, and responsible use of AI — including efforts to address technology-facilitated violence against women and girls.
Recognition of Pakistan’s Leadership
During the meeting, Naciri presented Tarar with a letter of appreciation from UN Women’s Executive Director, recognizing Pakistan’s successful hosting of the 9th OIC Ministerial Conference on Women and its upcoming two-year chairmanship role, along with its broader leadership on women’s empowerment. He reaffirmed UN Women’s commitment to deepening its partnership with the Ministry of Human Rights.
For his part, Tarar reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with UN Women on gender equality and women’s rights through stronger institutions, effective policy, and international collaboration.
