Berlin, 12 Aug, 2023 (GNP): As the surge of new artificial intelligence tools jeopardizes the livelihood of human artists, Eveline Fröhlich, a visual artist from Stuttgart, Germany, expressed her frustration at the unauthorized utilization of artists’ work scraped from the internet by AI models. These models have exploited artwork without consent or compensation, leaving artists feeling helpless and devoid of protection.
Fröhlich’s outlook changed when she discovered Glaze, a tool engineered by computer scientists at the University of Chicago. Glaze employs subtle pixel-level adjustments to prevent AI’s efforts to perceive artwork, providing a means for artists to push back against this encroachment. This newfound empowerment invigorated Fröhlich and other artists, who previously felt defenseless.

This wave of artists is rallying against AI’s encroachment, endeavoring to safeguard their digital imagery from manipulation that can disrupt artistic integrity or endanger their livelihoods. While these tools enable remarkable feats, they also facilitate the misuse of images, enabling malicious actors to create deceptive content or mimic an artist’s style.
However, a countermovement is emerging among researchers who are actively developing innovative strategies to shield individuals’ visual content from AI’s manipulation. As AI models become increasingly skilled at imitating unique artistic styles and autonomously generating artworks, these protective measures offer a glimmer of hope for artists seeking to maintain control over their creative output in an evolving digital landscape.
