Islamabad, 3 Jun, 2023 (GNP): The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) of Pakistan has rolled out a new system for identity verification using iris biometrics. The move is aimed at improving the accuracy and security of the verification process.
Under the new system, citizens of Pakistan can now use their iris to verify their identity for various purposes, including opening bank accounts, obtaining SIM cards, and accessing government services. Previously, identity verification was done through the use of fingerprints, which could sometimes be affected by factors such as aging or physical damage.
Iris biometrics uses the unique patterns within an individual’s iris to create a biometric template that can be used for identity verification. The system is considered highly accurate and secure, with a false acceptance rate of less than 0.1%.

To use the new system, citizens will need to register their iris biometric data with NADRA. The process involves capturing high-resolution images of both eyes, which are then used to create a biometric template that is stored in the NADRA database.
Once registered, citizens can use their iris to authenticate their identity in various situations. For example, when opening a bank account, the customer can use their iris to confirm their identity instead of presenting a physical ID card. Similarly, when applying for a SIM card, the customer can use their iris to verify their identity instead of providing additional documents.
The move to iris biometrics is expected to improve the accuracy and security of identity verification in Pakistan. However, there are concerns about the potential for misuse of biometric data and the need to protect citizens’ privacy.
NADRA has assured citizens that their data will be securely stored and protected and that the system will be regularly audited to ensure compliance with privacy regulations.
The adoption of iris biometrics by NADRA is a significant step towards improved and more secure identity verification in Pakistan.
