NEW YORK (GNP): Spain’s Royal Family made a landmark appearance at the World Cup final in New Jersey on Sunday, with King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia and their two daughters, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía, traveling abroad together on an official engagement for the first time in the monarchy’s history.
The trip carried significance well beyond the football result. It marked the first occasion on which Felipe and Letizia have undertaken an international engagement accompanied by both their daughters, placing Leonor, the heir to the throne, and her younger sister Sofía in a more visible position on the world stage as their roles within the Crown continue to expand.
Until now, the family’s travels together outside Spain had largely remained private affairs. Leonor and Sofía have previously visited countries including Greece, where they joined their parents in January for the funeral of Princess Irene, a trip that appeared on the official royal calendar but was understood to be a family occasion rather than an institutional one. Sunday’s appearance in New Jersey stood apart as a formal, celebratory engagement undertaken jointly and publicly.
Security protocol shaped the logistics of the journey. Following customary practice tied to the line of succession, though not a formal legal requirement, Princess Leonor traveled to the United States separately from her parents and sister, who flew together. The arrangement is standard practice intended to safeguard continuity of the Crown should an emergency affect one travel party.
For the sisters, the occasion echoed a moment from childhood. In 2010, Leonor and Sofía appeared alongside their grandparents, King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofía, and their parents, then Prince and Princess of Asturias, at a Royal Palace reception after Spain’s first World Cup triumph in South Africa.
Photographs from that celebration, including images of the young princesses examining the trophy, remain among the enduring pictures of that victory. With Spain again reaching the final sixteen years later, the possibility of a similar palace reception, this time with Leonor and Sofía attending as adults, added a layer of continuity to the occasion.
The appearance also reflects a broader pattern in how the two princesses have begun stepping into public life. Leonor, who completed part of her education in the United Kingdom, has already undertaken her first solo official trip abroad, to Portugal, and has taken on a more prominent public role, including delivering a closing address at the Princess of Girona Foundation Awards.

Sofía has followed a comparable trajectory and is expected to travel to Paris in September following the family’s summer break, continuing what royal observers describe as her gradual introduction to international engagements.
Royal analysts note that Sunday’s joint appearance signals an evolving approach by the Spanish Crown toward presenting a more unified public image abroad, one that positions both princesses as central to the monarchy’s future rather than keeping their international profiles separate. The World Cup final, watched by a global audience, offered the family a high-visibility setting to make that shift without the formality of a state visit.
