Leaders of North Korea and Russia exchanged letters to strengthen ties

Leaders promise to strengthen security ties as the US accuses Pyongyang of providing weapons to Moscow.

Pyongyang, 15 Aug, 2023 (GNP): In a significant diplomatic move, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin have exchanged letters, expressing their commitment to enhancing their bilateral relationship. The letters were exchanged on the occasion of the 78th anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japan’s colonial rule, a momentous event celebrated as a national holiday in South Korea.

According to the sources, Kim Jong Un’s letter to Putin emphasized the historical ties between the two nations, particularly their collaboration during World War II that led to victory over Japan. Kim underscored that this enduring friendship is now demonstrating its strength and resilience as they stand united against imperialist practices and hegemony. He expressed his conviction that their friendship will evolve into a “long-standing strategic relationship” that aligns with the demands of the new era.

“The two countries will always emerge victorious, strongly supporting and cooperating with each other in the course of achieving their common goal and cause,” Kim’s letter stated.

Russian President Putin responded in kind, assuring Kim of their shared commitment to strengthen bilateral cooperation across all sectors for the well-being, stability, and security of both nations and the broader Northeast Asian region.

The exchange of letters occurs amidst growing ties between North Korea and Russia, both of which have faced increased isolation from Western countries due to sanctions and geopolitical conflicts. These developments come against the backdrop of Russia’s military involvement in Ukraine and its subsequent strained relations with the West.

The United States has raised concerns about potential military cooperation between North Korea and Russia, particularly about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The US Department of State has expressed its unease over such possibilities and highlighted that any security cooperation or arms deal between the two nations would violate UN Security Council resolutions.

As Kim and Putin reiterate their commitment to strengthening ties, the global community remains vigilant about the evolving dynamics in the region. The upcoming trilateral summit between the leaders of South Korea, the US, and Japan at Camp David will address various security concerns, including those related to North Korea and Ukraine.

Meanwhile, in a separate statement, Pyongyang’s vice foreign minister, Kim Son Gyong criticized the US for calling a UN Security Council meeting to address North Korea’s human rights situation. He asserted that this meeting underscores the “ugly hostile face of the US,” accusing it of confrontational behavior and misuse of power in international forums.
