Iranian President Pezeshkian Arrives in Islamabad on State Visit

Islamabad (GNP): H.E. Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, arrived in Islamabad on Tuesday on a State Visit to Pakistan at the invitation of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif. Dr. Pezeshkian is accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising ministers and senior officials.

During the visit, President Pezeshkian held talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and met President Asif Ali Zardari. Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also called on the visiting dignitary. This marks Dr. Pezeshkian’s second visit to Pakistan in his capacity as President of Iran.

The two sides reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral relations and explored avenues for enhanced cooperation across key sectors, including trade, energy, border security, people-to-people exchanges, and regional connectivity. The visit also provided an important opportunity to discuss ongoing diplomatic engagements following the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, as well as regional and international developments of mutual interest.

The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Islamabad stated that the visit conveys the message of the Government and people of Iran to the Government and people of Pakistan, following a year marked by solidarity and support. Pakistan’s sincere mediatory role in de-escalating regional tensions and restoring peace and stability was specifically acknowledged in the Iranian diplomatic communique.

The visit follows direct US-Iran negotiations held at Burgenstock, Switzerland, referred to as the Lake Lucerne Summit, which were mediated by Pakistan and Qatar, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir representing Pakistan.

The talks, which built upon the 14-point Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding signed on June 18, established a framework for further technical discussions to address key regional security concerns, including arrangements related to the Strait of Hormuz and Lebanon.

In connection with the visit, the Islamabad Red Zone was sealed and extensive security arrangements were put in place by the capital administration and law enforcement agencies.

Federal government employees in designated Red Zone offices observed a work-from-home directive, while major hiking trails in the city were temporarily closed to the public for the duration of the visit.
